Guidance is a whole-school activity embracing all subject areas and providing for the personal and social, educational and vocational development of all students in our school through educational guidance, career guidance and personal counselling. Mrs. Sinead Flanagan is the school’s Guidance Counsellor.
Much Guidance work is done in classroom-based activities across all subject areas and by particular support personnel i.e. class teachers. When necessary, individual consultations are also arranged on an appointment basis with Mrs. Flanagan.
At Junior Cycle, the Guidance alternates with Wellbeing classes. TY students have two timetabled periods of Guidance each week and 5th and 6th Yrs have one timetabled class of Guidance every week. The Guidance Counsellor usually organises trips to any College Open Days/Career Exhibitions in which a considerable number of students express an interest.
Students often turn to their teachers for advice or assistance in connection with particular issues in their school and/or personal lives. Where it becomes apparent that more skilled counselling may be required, a referral will be made to Mrs. Flanagan, who will provide a setting wherein the student can present their personal issues in a non-threatening and confidential environment. Specific counselling approaches are used to empower the student to find new and more appropriate ways of coping or to work through painful experiences that may be impinging on his/her life. This is a confidential service. However, students should be aware that there are certain occasions that confidentiality may need to be broken, i.e. when the student or another person is considered to be at personal risk. Appropriate personnel are informed at that time.
The Guidance Counsellor consults with the following:
Subject Teachers, Class Tutors, Learning Support Team, Year Heads, Deputy Principal, Principal and Parents.
The following are consulted with the permission of the student and/or parents:
Doctors, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Social Care Workers and other Professionals.
